VeloSano is a community bike ride that raises money for cancer research at Cleveland Clinic. This Saturday marks our fourth year participating, and, while we’ve chosen different routes each year, the reasons we ride remain the same.
Each of us has a cancer story. For me, my mother-in-law, father-in-law, two grandparents, several aunts, uncles and even cousins all have suffered from some form of cancer.
It’s a hard thing to hear, “so-and-so has cancer”. When my mother-in-law was diagnosed, my oldest son was only a year old. From the beginning, her prognosis wasn’t very good and I couldn’t help but feel cheated out of a life with her as my son’s grandmother. She was a wonderful woman and I saw how she had been with him his first year of life – I know that relationship would have only grown stronger if she was still with us. Cancer robbed us of that chance.
Because cancer runs rampant in our family, I ride for my children. I do not want the past (our genetics) to predict their future and I truly believe that the work we do for VeloSano will someday impact my children’s lives for the better.
So, that’s why I ride. For them.
The rest of my teammates at Hileman Group have similar stories and we all want to do our part to help cure cancer. "Bike to cure" is VeloSano’s motto and, with each mile we ride, we do exactly that.
I know we’re not the only ones who have been touched by cancer. This is why it’s so important to do what we can to raise the dollars necessary to aid in cancer research. And, if you can relate, we ask that you help our cause by donating to our ride. Because, just like it takes a village to raise a child, it’s also takes a village to make an impact.
So, please, consider donating to our team for the cause. Every single dollar raised goes to cancer research at Cleveland Clinic and you could be a part of a movement that eradicates cancer from the world.
To quote our friends at VeloSano, "how far will you go for the cure"?
